How to Get a Veterinary Health Certificate Before Traveling With Your Pet

There are several ways you can prepare your pet for traveling with you. Whether you’re going away on vacation or relocating to a different state, knowing how to prepare a dog or cat for the trip is essential. In addition to helping the animal feel at ease, you’ll have to ensure any health requirements are met. This often involves obtaining a veterinary health certificate for each pet.

Make Sure Shots Are Up to Date

Well in advance of your trip, you should double check your pet’s vaccination records. Be sure that your pet is updated on their required vaccinations and check to see when they will be due for their next round of shots. If they will need shots close to your departure date, talk to your vet about getting them earlier.

Know Where to Get the Certification

You may not be able to get a pet health certification from your normal vet. Only veterinarians who are authorized by the USDA are permitted to issue certifications. If your regular vet can’t issue the health certification, they may direct you to someone in your community who can perform this service for you.

Timing is Important

You must get a complete veterinary health certificate for your pet within 10 days of your departure date. If you don’t meet this deadline, you may not be able to travel with your pet. Even if you do get authorization to take your pet with you, be prepared to have your pet quarantined when you’re traveling out of the country.
