If you are planning to build a deck for your backyard there are some things you should keep in mind before you get started. You want to be certain your deck is as comfortable as possible so that you will you will enjoy it for years to come.

Safety
It is not uncommon for people to begin building a deck, get the basics complete and then settle into using it without finishing the details. Often these details are the aspects of the deck that keep you and your family safe. Make sure that you have completed your deck including hand rails for steps as well as railings to keep people from taking a tumble off the deck. Whether it is for the safety of your kids or for guests who might have a drink too many, you don’t want to be leaving your deck open for injury or law suits.

Sun Protection
A deck might seem all well and good until you try to sit out there in the blazing sun. Take a look at the sun exposure you get throughout the day. Determine what the direction the sun will hit your deck and think of ways you can protect yourself from the sun. Many people love Suffolk Awnings, especially awnings that are retractable and can be used when needed. You can also consider privacy screens to help keep the sun off your patio and to provide protection from windy days as well. Some people prefer pergolas but they don’t provide much protection from sun or rain and will make it impossible to install an awning.

Wood Protection
Make sure that the materials you use have proper protection from the elements. Remember your deck will be outside all year round. You want to have the right all weather protectants so that your deck does not fade or get wood rot from the elements. Be sure you know the treatments required and how often your deck requires treating to keep it well sealed.

Size
Be certain the deck you are building is acceptable for your town’s zoning laws. Many a neighbor has poked their noses in to someone else’s business because they do not like the size or position of a deck. Be certain you are allowed to build a deck and that you are building it within the zoning laws so you don’t invest all of that time and money only to discover you have to tear it all down.
