New York, was by then, under English control and Charles II gave the land to his brother, the Duke of York. Until 1790 New York was the capital of the United States but was then changed to Philadelphia and then to Washington D.C.

The 151 foot statue greeted the millions of immigrants as they passed by on their way to Ellis Island. Today, she is a beacon of truth and justice as well as freedom.
