Pushes Off a Nursing Home
If you’re able to take your family member to an adult day care center, then it usually pushes aside the notion of going to a nursing home or an assisted living facility for a few months to a few years depending on the age of the person. Many centers have staff on hand who are skilled at everything from basic care to Alzheimer’s care. Your family member will be in an environment that is safe and around people at a similar stage in life. Several activities are usually offered, including games, crafts, and day trips to stores or attractions.
Time for Family
One benefit for the caregiver is that you get to spend time with your family or complete tasks that you need to get done that you might not have time for while caring for your loved one. You’ll have a chance to step back from bathing, cooking, cleaning, and doing the other things that can sometimes make you feel like a nurse instead of a family member. You can often join in on some of the activities that are offered at the center once you do get back on a typical schedule that you’ve held. There are usually a few medical services that adult centers offer, such as blood pressure checks, vision exams, and dental care, that the person might not be able to receive while they are at home.
